Current state of data concerning the radical right

According to the EUMC statistical data on racism is collected in France by the Central Board of the security branch of the French police force of the Ministry of the Interior (Direction Centrale des Renseignements Généraux, DCRG). This data collecting strives to provide the government with information on racist phenomena so that it can be used in state strategies of prevention. The method consists in gathering all data which can be identified by the regional departments of the DCRG across the country, from physical attacks to racist graffiti (EUMC 2005a: 15). EUMC found the available data collection focusing on the activities of extreme right-wing groups/hate speech as good or excellent (EUMC 2005b: ix). However, the notion of “ethnicity” is considered illegal under the constitution. As a result, the nationality of the victims is not recorded systematically (EUMC 2005a: 20).
